Neurodivergent
Relationship Assessment

for Autistic and ADHD Couples

A neurodiversity-affirming consultation to help couples understand how differences in communication, sensory processing, and nervous system regulation may be shaping their relationship.

Understanding the Process

What Is a Neurodivergent Relationship Assessment?

Relationships where one or both partners are neurodivergent can involve patterns that are difficult to understand without the right framework. Many couples seek support after repeated misunderstandings, communication challenges, or cycles of conflict that feel confusing or unresolved.

This assessment is designed to help couples better understand how differences in communication style, sensory experience, emotional processing, and nervous system regulation may be influencing their relationship. The goal is a clearer framework and practical recommendations for daily life or future therapy.

This is a structured consultation process, not ongoing therapy.

This assessment may also be helpful for couples already working with a therapist. Some clinicians refer couples for additional formulation clarity while continuing their therapeutic work together.

Assessment Scope

Areas Explored in the Assessment

The evaluation considers six interconnected areas that commonly shape neurodivergent relationship dynamics.

Neurodivergent Traits

Autism traits, ADHD traits, sensory processing differences, and masking patterns.

Mental Health Context

Anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, chronic stress, sleep disruption, and hormonal changes that may affect mood and regulation.

Communication and Processing Styles

How each partner processes information, expresses emotions, and interprets social cues.

Nervous System Regulation

Patterns of overwhelm, shutdown, escalation, and recovery during conflict or stress.

Relationship Interaction Patterns

Cycles of conflict, disconnection, repair, pursuit, withdrawal, and misunderstanding.

Strengths and Protective Factors

Areas of stability, loyalty, shared interests, and relational strengths.

Assessment Process

How the Assessment Works

The process typically includes five structured steps, from an initial meeting through to a written clinical summary with practical recommendations.

1

Couples Intake Session

An initial 90-minute meeting to understand relationship history, current concerns, and goals for the assessment.

2

Individual Interviews

Each partner meets individually with the clinician (60 minutes each) to explore personal experience, neurodivergent traits, and mental health context.

3

Questionnaires and Screening Measures

Standardized measures related to neurodivergent traits, mental health, and relationship functioning.

4

Clinical Formulation

Information is integrated to clarify how neurodivergent traits, regulation patterns, life stressors, and relationship dynamics may be interacting.

5

Feedback Session and Written Summary

A structured 90-minute session where findings are reviewed and practical recommendations are provided, followed by a written clinical summary the couple may share with their therapist if they choose.

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this couples therapy?

No. This is an evaluation and consultation process rather than ongoing therapy. The goal is clinical formulation and practical recommendations, not treatment.

Do both partners need a diagnosis?

No. Some couples come with formal diagnoses, while others come because neurodivergent traits are suspected to be influencing the relationship. A diagnosis is not required to participate.

Will this assessment provide a diagnosis?

This service is not designed as a full diagnostic autism or ADHD assessment. Its focus is on understanding how neurodivergent traits may be influencing relationship dynamics. If a full diagnostic assessment is relevant, this can be discussed during the process.

What if we are already working with a couples therapist?

This consultation is designed to complement ongoing therapy. Many couples complete it while continuing with their existing therapist. The written summary can be shared with that therapist to help inform future work together.
